How To Prepare Your Electrical System for Winter

During the cold temperatures of wintertime, even if we don’t get a lot of snow in Texas, your electrical system works harder than you might realize. After all, if everything is working normally, you likely won’t give it a second thought.

Even though it’s already January, it’s never too late to winterize your electrical system as it can go a long way in terms of protecting your power. Here are a few things that you can do to make sure your system is equipped for the colder months of the year.

Protect Your Heat Source

No matter what kind of HVAC system you have to warm your property, it uses electricity to run. Therefore, it’s smart to make sure your heating system, be it a furnace, boiler, heat pump, or other heater, is functional and has a proper connection to the power grid. Hire a professional to come out and check on all of these so they can assure you that you’re set to stay warm enough all winter.

Consider Lighting Options

Because of daylight savings time, winter means it is darker outside for longer. This could mean you have lights on more often, which could run up the costs of your electricity bill. Consider switching to energy-efficient bulbs that don’t use as much power, and make sure that your outdoor lights are also sufficient for the dark days.

Have a Power Outage Plan

The inclement weather during wintertime can cause some major power outages. If the city experiences a blackout, do you know what to do? It is smart to have a plan B so you are not left in the dark inside. You can have a portable or whole-home generator installed to make sure that you have backup power. Reach out to an expert to discuss the options for generators.

The installers were professional, knowledgeable, clean, courtesy, and helpful. I wouldn’t hesitate to use their service again.
Had to replace both of our heat pump units in our home. Comfort Consultant Bryce, was very professional and knowledgeable and gave us options for our new units and was very easy to reach during our decision process. Lightfoot and their entire tech team, Mike, Zach, Jr. and Ledon did an amazing job! Showed up early and worked hard all day to complete job. Very professional and knowledgeable and answered any questions we had during install process. They left work areas completely clean. These guys are amazing! I had to call 2 days later for an issue and they were quick to respond and resolve. Highly recommend this company!
Friendly, knowledgeable, fast, conscientious, fair, could not of asked for anything else for my retro-fit install.

My experience of Lightfoot Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electrical began with the Great Texas Freeze of February, 2021. That unusual temperature drop occasioned the freezing and rupture of kitchen water supply pipes. Lightfoot was in the Bellaire Park North neighborhood. Lightfoot promptly repaired the damaged hot and cold water pipes. Lightfoot determined that the residence water pressure was inappropriate. Lightfoot installed a water pressure regulator system for the residence. May 29, 2024, a Lightfoot team led by Mr. Wade Gordzelik installed a Moen Flo Smart system for the safety and security of the residence. On May 29, 2025, Mr. Robert Burns of Lightfoot removed a defective kitchen faucet system and replaced it with a Moen 87233SRS kitchen faucet. On the basis of an evaluation performed by Mr. Bryce Horton of Lightfoot Mechanical, I have contracted with Lightfoot to install a 5 ton Lennox Central Air Conditioning and Heating system in June 2025. I have had extensive experience with Lightfoot capabilities and performance. I have found Lightfoot Plumbing, Heating & Electrical to be a competent, efficient and outstanding contractor.
